- Your Summer Diet: Simple Calorie-Saving Tips for Cooking Flavorful Food
Eating healthy does not have to mean sacrificing great flavor for a waistline worthy of flaunting at the beach this summer season. We have some simple calorie-saving tips to cut calories from cooking.
But first, let’s put things into perspective. What exactly are the main benefits of preparing your own meals? Two things:
One, you get to control your portions. Two, you get to substitute high-calorie ingredients with healthier options! Here are some ways to save on calories from your home-cooked favorites.
- Cook Chicken with the skin. Strip skin after cooking
Author of The Complete Light Kitchen Rose Reisman says that wrapping chicken meat in foil before cooking results in dried, bland-tasting meat. Maximize flavor by rubbing garlic or other seasonings and herbs of your choice under the skin. Doing this cuts approximately 56 calories or 7 grams of fat per 4 ounce serving.
- Combine a ratio 50-50 mix of ground meat (beef, chicken or turkey) with ground fresh mushrooms for lighter burgers
If you’ve just got to have that burger, cut the fat by using a 50-50 ratio of beef, (chicken or turkey saves you more calories!) and ground fresh or roasted mushrooms. Essence Nutrition founder Monica Auslader says that you obtain more phytochemicals and more fiber, plus cancer-fighting compounds with this calorie-saving trick.
- Combine rice grains with cauliflower, or substitute rice completely with cauliflower “rice”
Combining a 50-50 ratio of cauliflower and rice saves around 86 calories one (1) cup serving. According to a study conducted by a group from the University of British Columbia, participants who swapped starchy foods like pasta, rice, potatoes with less starchy vegetables like cauliflower had lowered cholesterol levels and significant weight loss. One cup, or a 250 ml serving of cauliflower is a mere 29 calories and 5 grams of carbs, while the same serving portion of long-grain brown rice is 216 calories, with 45 grams of carbs!
- Keep it creamy by swapping mayonnaise with yogurt
Substituting yogurt for mayonnaise for your salads and sandwiches would give you the same texture and creaminess. Half a cup of 2-percent Greek yogurt packs 75 calories. The same amount of mayo is approximately 450 calories!
- Skip the sugar and use Natural sweetener instead
You do not have to deprive yourself of your all-time favorite drinks or desserts. Satisfy your sweet tooth and flavor your food and beverages with a carb-free, zero-calorie sweetener like Leaflife Stevia. ®
Substitute one (1) teaspoon of sugar with one (1) sachet of Leaflife Stevia ® sweetener, made from the Stevia rebaudiana plant.
Another obvious tip is to use low-fat options for food items like milk (using low-fat or non-fat options), cheese, sour cream, and others.
Healthy meals should not be boring and tasteless, otherwise, you will definitely feel deprived! Slash your fat and sugar intake without sacrificing flavour and cooking procedures by following some of these key calorie-saving cooking tips. You will see the pounds come off just in time for bikini season when you combine these healthy cooking tips with consistent, proper exercise.
Get your summer diet started. Happy cooking!
